Wilsons Promontory National Park
Wilsons Promontory, or the 'Prom' as it is affectionately known, is the southern most tip of the Australian mainland, situated 200 kilometres south east of Melbourne an easy three hour drive.
From Canberra the park is 750 kilometres (approx 8 hours drive). Follow the Cann Valley Highway, Princess Highway and South Gippsland Highway to Foster, then turn south and follow the signs.
Tidal River township is approx 30 kilometres from the park entrance.
Wilsons Promontory the most recognised icon in this part of the south coast, was named by George Bass in 1798. The name Wilson was given to the Promontory in honour of Thomas Wilson, a friend of Matthew Flinders.
It is the perfect year round holiday destination, with the stable sunny weather of autumn, the sea mists of winter, the beautiful wildflowers of spring, and the long hot summer days offering unique appeal at the Prom.
The Prom declared a National Park in 1898, covers almost 50,000 hectares and offers an incredible diversity of natural environments to explore. Fantastic beaches, rockpools, rainforests, fern gullies and spectacular rock formations are some of the features of this diverse National Park.
The perfect place to see wildlife such as wombats, emus, kangaroos, wallabies, birds in a natural environment. Be aware of their presence – drive carefully and observe the speed limit within the park.
There's plenty to do at the Prom and the beaches are very popular for swimming. You can also enjoy bushwalking, hiking, camping, fishing, surfing, snorkelling, scuba diving, wildlife viewing or just relax and enjoy the beauty of the Park.
Tidal River, located in the heart of Wilsons Promontory, is perfectly situated near beach and river, and is the ideal place from which you can explore this fantastic park. A natural camping environment at Tidal River features all modern amenities and conveniences for campers and visitors to the Park. There are 480 campsites available.
