Cape Paterson

Tucked away amongst the sand dunes Cape Paterson is 10kms from Wonthaggi and 21kms from Inverloch through the Bunurong Marine & Coastal Park 17 kilometers of rugged sandstone cliffs and prominent headlands with fantastic views of Bass Strait often compared to a mini version of the Great Ocean Road and certainly a must do if in the area.

The Cape as it is affectionately known by the thousands of holiday makers who come from all parts of the state to enjoy the peace and tranquility that is on offer.

Accommodation is available at the Caravan Park with powered and unpowered caravan or camping sites right on the beach. Holiday home rentals through local real estate agents.

The golden beaches, rock pools, good swimming, fishing, diving and the people you meet are the big attractions, and all of this is only a couple of hours from Melbourne and getting closer with the revamp of the Bass Highway.

Still relatively undiscovered, although properties have increased dramatically in price Cape Paterson has its own hotel which serves bistro meals 7 days a week.

Marvel at Bunurong attractions such as

Shack Bay: With a boardwalk down to the beach is a great spot for a family picnic, and the kids can splash in the shallows. In years gone by, shacks used by Wonthaggi Coal Miners dotted this section of the coast.

Eagles Nest: Is the most recognized landmark in the area-resembles the top half of the map of Australia.

Smugglers Cave: Water washed sandy floored caverns, accessible at low tide, flooded at high tide (make sure you are aware of tide movements).

Flat Rocks: a rock hoppers delight at low tide and the site of the Inverloch Dinosaur Digs. Once again be aware of tide movements.

The name Bunurong refers to the Aboriginal group that lived in the area and used the coast for food gathering. Today a very popular diving, snorkelling and surfing destination. Note: Fishing is not permitted between the Oaks and Eagles Nest.

The Cape Paterson Surf Lifesaving Club patrols during summer.
