Warrnambool Whale Watching
Warrnambool Whale Watching
Logans Beach Warrnambool VIC 3280
Almost every year between June and September female Southern Right Whales return to the sheltered waters off Warrnambool’s Logan Beach to calve. Gestation takes 9-10 months and a single calf is born in this shallow protected bay.
The whales, who often swim within a hundred metres from shore can be observed from the Viewing platform.
Throughout the summer the Southern Right Whales live in the sub-antartic waters which are rich in their food. During winter they commence their northern migration to the warmer waters of th coast of Australia eventually ending up at Warrnambool’s Logans Beach.
Southern Right Whales were apparently so called because they were the ‘right’ whales to hunt being large and slow moving, rich in oil and baleen.
Once these whales were hunted to near extinction. Now they are protected by an international agreement to ensure the safety of their numbers.
