Nicholson
Nicholson is a small hamlet on the Princes Highway between Bairnsdale and Swan Reach with the Nicholson River flowing through offering the chance to land a nice fish or two. The town is also part of the Twin Rivers Farm Food and Wine Trail which showcases the excellent food and wine available in the area. More Info Lakes or Bairnsdale Information Centres.

The Retreat Hotel Motel is the landmark of the town, sitting high on the hill overlooking the river, the hotel has had a reputation for hospitality that has been carried on since the days of the gold rush. Your hosts Paul and Pam Brookes are a wealth of info re where the fish are biting.
Bistro lunch and dinner is available 7 days or simply have a cold one on balcony at the rear of the hotel which overlooks the river. Could think of worst things to do!
The hotel has also been highly commended over the years for monies raised for the Royal Childrens Hospital Appeal. A great effort from all concerned.
The Nicholson General Store is well stocked and has a reputation for its home made pies.
There are several excellent fishing spots along the Nicholson River the jetty opposite the hotel being one. “The Tyers”, The Powerlines”, “The Poplars”, “The Car Bodies” being others. The river yields mostly Bream but catches of Mullet, Garfish and Flathead are not that uncommon. Best bits are sandworm, prawn and spider crabs.
Facilities in the park opposite the boat ramp are great for a picnic with children’s playground, toilets, bbqs and grassed area. The perfect spot to break your trip if you are travelling the east coast. |
