Lavers Hill - Great Ocean Road

Lavers Hill 45 minutes from Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road is situated high in the Otway Ranges recognized as one of the finest temperate rainforests in Australia.

Lavers Hill has a well stocked general store which sells petrol, sit down and take-away food, newspapers etc. Several cafes provided delicious light meals and great coffee and there is a Hotel/Motel  with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

Accommodation  is available at the motel, bed and breakfast establishments and boutique accommodation close to town. Stay a day or two and explore this unique area of Victoria.

Magnificent fern gullies, waterfalls, huge trees, some hundreds of years old. Walks and self drive tours await exploration. One of the major attractions along the Great Ocean Road is Melba Gully State Park sometimes called “ The Jewell of the Otways”. One of the wettest areas of Victoria the gully is a dense rainforest of huge trees and tree ferns. Glow worms can be seen here - Guided tours are conducted during main holiday periods. Several fascinating nature walks will enlighten you. Water, picnic tables, fireplaces and toilets are provided, camping is not permitted.

Nearby Waterfalls

Triplet Falls
One of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Otways which has in recent times undergone an extensive upgrade. View the lower cascades as you follow the raised boardwalk through to the main falls. 3 cascades thunder past the viewing platform.
Triplet Falls is approx 90 minutes from Apollo Bay via Lavers Hill. At Lavers Hill turn right into Colac Lavers Hill Road follow for approx 14 kilometres turn right onto Phillips Track. This gravel road will lead you to the falls a great place for a family picnic, facilities include toilets and tables.

Beauchamp Falls
Return to Lavers Hill Colac Road and turn right towards Beech Forest, approximately 8 kms. Just past Beech Forest turn right into Aire Valley Road (gravel road) a short drive turn left to Beauchamp Falls Picnic facilities include tables and toilets. The walk to the falls is quite strenuous for some, moderate for others. It is recommended that you are of a certain fitness level.

Hopetoun Falls
Return to Aire Valley Road turn left travel approx 6kms and you will arrive at the falls car park. Easy walk down the steps with hand rail, approx 10 minutes, but be aware its a hard, steep, walk back to car park. Boardwalk with viewing platform at the spectacular falls makes the effort worthwhile.

Caution
Walking tracks to the various waterfall in the Otways can become muddy and slippery after rain. Appropriate footwear is recommended and stick to the designated tracks. Also be aware that mobile phones are frequently out of range in the Otways.

Seasonal conditions can change so for up to date information before setting out exploring waterfalls or walks contact the Apollo Bay Information Centre on (03) 5237 6529 or go to the Parks Victoria website www.parkweb.vic.gov.au. Mobile phone reception in these areas is usually poor or non existent.

 

Otway Fly Treetop Adventure
15 minutes from Lavers Hill - travel Beech Forrest Road C155 exit at Phillips Track. The Otway Fly is a stunning treetop walk perched 25 meters above the rainforest. For the more daring there are spiral stairs to take you to the top of a 47 meter lookout tower. Open daily 9am to 5pm. Last entry to tree top walk is 4pm (check winter times). Travel back through the ages and roam amongst the prehistoric display with a dinosaur around every corner - all at The Otway Fly. Cafe for light meals and coffee.

World Famous 12 Apostles
Proceed back to Lavers Hill and continue west along The Great Ocean Road for approximately one hour. The Twelve Apostles approximately 10 minutes from Port Campbell are giant limestone stacks shaped by nature over millions of years. Wild, southern ocean weather has carved these huge rock sculptures from the soft, sheer limestone cliffs leaving a series of stacks some 45 meters high.
