Shipwrecks in and around Port Campbell National Park
Shipwrecks in and around Port Campbell National Park
Port Campbell VIC 3269
The west coast of Victoria once inspired fear, sailors spoke of wild seas and dangerous rocks, of reefs which lay beneath the surface of the water, of steep cliffs and heavy mists. Many ships had narrow escapes in this stretch of water, many were not so fortunate.
The area between Cape Otway and Port Fairy claimed over 80 ships in 40 years: ships which had traveled safely across half the world, to find disaster only miles from their destination.

Silver Gulls
Silver Gulls also known as Sea Gulls nest from August to December. Males in the colony establish a small territory and are then joined by a female, usually the mate from the previous year. Nests are built on the ground so they can spot any predators approaching. Between 2-4 olive blotched eggs are laid and both partners share nesting duties. The eggs take 21-27 days to hatch.

The Wharf Area - at its peak in the 1850’s the port was the second busiest in Australia. Wool, wheat and gold were loaded onto great sailing ships bound for England.
Today, The Wharf is a wonderful place to relax and watch the world go by. The Norfolk pines and colonial buildings form a picturesque background to the tranquil waters of the Moyne River. Almost every year between June and September female Southern Right Whales return to the sheltered waters off Warrnambool’s Logan Beach to calve. Gestation takes 9-10 months and a single calf is born in this shallow protected bay.
The whales, who often swim within a hundred metres from shore can be observed from the Viewing platform.
Throughout the summer the Southern Right Whales live in the sub-antartic waters which are rich in their food. During winter they commence their northern migration to the warmer waters of th coast of Australia eventually ending up at Warrnambool’s Logans Beach.
Southern Right Whales were apparently so called because they were the ‘right’ whales to hunt being large and slow moving, rich in oil and baleen.
Once these whales were hunted to near extinction. Now they are protected by an international agreement to ensure the safety of their numbers.
