Cann River
Cann River is a small town where the Princes and Monaro Highways meet. The A1 takes you to Sydney 599km or to Canberra via the Monaro some 293kms.
The town is well serviced with motel and hotel accommodation, spacious caravan park on the Melbourne side of the bridge. Bistro meals at the hotel, coffee shops and eateries located at the service station and in the main street.
From Cann River you can explore the Croajingolong National Park which runs along this coast. Take the road opposite the hotel to Tamboon Inlet approximately 27kms, the road is bitumen for 18kms then you are on a dirt road for several kilometers before coming to a junction, continue on left and you come to another junction Tamboon Inlet is the right exit, if you continue on left for another 20kms you will come to Thurra River Camp Park at Point Hicks further on through the park you come to a car park where the walk to the lighthouse commences (approx 4.5 kms return). Camping is available at Thurra River and other camp grounds in the area but is in great demand, especially during main holiday periods information Parks Victoria 13 1963.
Tamboon Inlet, which nature has isolated from the wild ocean with sand barriers is known for great fishing, boating, swimming and the birdlife is prolific, because the island and sandbars in the inlet are used as nesting sites by coastal and wading birds. Before heading down to Point Hicks be sure to check the road conditions as the dirt road can deteriorate after heavy rains. |
