Toora, Prom Country, Victoria, Australia

Toora

Approximately 13ks east from Foster on the South Gippsland Highway Toora is a pretty little town overlooking Corner Inlet. Permanent population is approx 500.

Turning off the highway into the main street, it is difficult to believe that this small country town was once the hub of South Gippsland.

Toora has a very good boat ramp, with the fishing in Corner Inlet something else and if you do not catch a fish head down and buy some from Wayne Cripps who has a shop on the wharf at Port Franklin.

The town is serviced by a supermarket in the main street. Bendigo Bank operates a branch here with petrol available on the outskirts of town call in and have chat with Peter and Jan.

The historic Royal Standard Hotel in Stanley Street, has always the centre of activity and is the meeting place of locals and visitors alike. Sample the menu, with the special of the day usually being the catch of the day, being right on Corner Inlet, the seafood is delicious. There is internet access at the hotel.

Accommodation is available in this unique wide verandah pub with plenty of boat storage, its your chance to getaway for a great fishing trip. Excellent accommodation is also to be found at the Toora Tourist Park on the highway.

Just past the Caravan Park is Silcock's Hill Road proceed up the hill to the lookout which offers magnificent views of Corner Inlet and beyond to Port Welshpool and the Prom.

Follow Silcock's Hill Road into the hinterland and onto Agnes Falls (sealed road 15ks) the highest single span falls in Victoria being some 60 metres- a great spot for a family picnic with wood fireplaces tables, toilets etc. Walking tracks for viewing. Fish for trout, eels and blackfish in the river above the falls.

Make a round trip up to Mt Best through picturesque hilly countryside, 6ks past Mt Best is Mt Fatigue the 360 degree views takes in Corner Inlet, Wilsons Promontory, the hill country and coastal areas and the cooling towers of the Latrobe Valley power stations can be seen on a clear day. The drive to Mt Fatigue and beyond to the Grand Ridge Road is through mountain ash and pine plantations. Some of the best views you will ever see, highly recommended and relatively undiscovered by the masses.

Boat Ramp

Launching and retrival of boats is limited to a short period either side of high tide. Water conditions may change quickly affecting water access to the ramp. 24 hour boat access is available at Port Welshpool ramp.
