Wonthaggi, situated on the south-west coast of Gippsland is 90 minutes drive from Melbourne on the Bass Highway, almost half way between Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory which makes it the ideal location to base your holiday.

It enjoys a mild coastal climate, the biggest shopping centre in South Gippsland with most major supermarkets and a host of speciality shops, excellent beaches close by (only 10ks to Cape Paterson, 14ks to Inverloch) and all the facilities you would expect from a major service town.

Wonthaggi was originally the State Coal Mining Town but today is a flourishing regional centre, backed by a variety of industry which has seen spectacular development, updated thinking and planning have and are continuing to take place in the town which is expected experience exceptional population growth in the next few years.

The Wonthaggi Workmen's Club which originally was the watering hole for the miners after a tough day digging coal has undergone spectacular development in recent years and has recently been extended to make it one of the largest Tatts Pokies outlet outside the Metropolitan area.

The Wonthaggi Club in McBride Avenue also has undergone extensive renovations in recent times and today is promoted as "The Complete Entertainment Venue" with an excellent array of dining and entertainment options. The club also has TAB and Sky Channel.

For those who prefer an atmosphere free of pokies, great meals and entertainment are also to be found at the towns three hotels none of which have poker machines, there is also cafes and take-aways catering for all tastes.

There is a wonderful choice of attractive family beaches and rugged coastline (Harmers Haven) for those long walks along the beach. You can swim in the heated pool, picnic, hike, canoe and fish to you hearts content and there are those pleasant drives to other attractive resorts and beauty spots.

Wonthaggi's State Coal Mine provides much incite into the history and heritage of this thriving township, so while holidaying along the coast take the time to visit this unique attraction. Open 7 days a week, all year round, excluding Christmas Day and Good Friday.

The mine information centre and snack shop area incorporates souvenir sales to allow you to purchase a small memento of your visit to the mine.
