Paynesville, East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia

Paynesville

Paynesville a 10 minute drive from Bairnsdale is known as the boating capital of the Gippsland Lakes with McMillan Straits, Newlands Arm and canals providing sheltered moorings for many boats and pleasure craft. The town is centrally located on the strait linking Lake King and Lake Victoria and has several swimming beaches for the family.

The Gunai (Kurni) tribes originally named the area “Toonalook” or “Place of Plenty Fish” - little has changed with excellent fishing in the Mitchell, Nicholson and Tambo Rivers which provide some of the best bream fishing in the state.

Watersports including windsurfing, sailing, jetski and waterskiing are also pursued in this wonderful holiday destination which has a range of accommodation and eateries to suit all budgets.

The township boasts an excellent shopping centre with restaurants, cafes and take-aways servicing the hungry visitors.

Bulls Cruises are based in Paynesville and offer you the chance hire a cruiser and explore the Gippsland Lakes at your leisure. Hire boats suitable from 2 to 10 persons.

Raymond Island a natural lake island with a small permanent population. Peaceful and bush covered with wonderful wildlife. Access to the island is by boat or car passenger ferry from Paynesville which departs every 15 minutes either side. Take your car over and explore. Range of accommodation available.

Eagle Point located 10 minutes drive from Bairnsdale on the Mitchell River. Very popular family holiday destination especially during the warmer months with boating, fishing, sailing and water skiing the main activities. View the Mitchell River silt jetties which stretch 10 kms into Lake King from the mouth of the Mitchell River. The silt jetties were built up over hundreds of years through the depositing of silt brought from the mountains and left along either side of the stream flow as it entered Lake King. They are second only to the silt jetties on the Mississippi River in the Gulf of Mexico.

Bluff View provides a magnificent view of the Gippsland Lakes.

Accommodation includes caravan and camp parks.
