Bairnsdale

Bairnsdale City 285 kilometres east of Melbourne an easy 3 hour drive, is the gateway to the region. Situated on the banks of the Mitchell River the city with its wide tree lined streets is the service centre for nearby coastal villages of Paynesville, Metung and Lakes Entrance.

Accommodation is plentiful from luxurious to camping and you will never go hungry with a great selection of restaurants, cafes and take-aways in town. The town boasts several major retail outlets and many speciality shops.

See and Do

There is plenty to occupy yourself and family in and around Bairnsdale
Den of Nargun Mitchell River National Park on the Dargo Road. One of several gorges, the Den of Nargun is described by Aboriginal legend as a beast of stone, which dragged unwary travelers into its den and any weapon directed against it turned back on its owner.

Experience the excitement of bike riding the rail trail which commences at Howlitt Park on the Lakes Entrance side of the bridge crossing the Mitchell River. The Rail Trail takes you all the way to Nowa Nowa. There is also a childrens playground picnic tables and bbq’s in the park.

Take a stroll along the beautiful Mitchell River, try your luck fishing you may catch an elusive bream or two or simply take a picnic lunch and relax by the river watching the world go by.

Regional Farmers Market is held the first Saturday of the month. Purchase local produce direct from the producer. Other Markets are held throughout East Gippsland ask at the Info Centre.

Horse Racing is conducted regularly at Bairnsdale. The track is on Forge Creek Road Ph: 03 5152 4057

The town boasts excellent bowling greens and croquet club on the corner of Pearson and Grant Streets. 18 hole golf course on the Paynesville Road at Eagle Point, green fee players welcome, resident pro.  Scenic 9 hole golf course, tennis club, squash and racquet ball centre for those trying to keep fit.

For the less energetic catch a latest release movie at the Cinema Centre in McLeod Street.

There is an archery and games park on the Lakes Entrance side of town and an antique clock furniture and collectables display on the Melbourne side of town
